HISTORY
Our Firm
was founded in 1876 by the distinguished Poughkeepsie
attorneys John Hackett and James L. Williams. Henry T. Hackett joined
the firm in 1912 and later served as President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's personal attorney and Executor of his Last Will and
Testament. Firm member and state assemblyman John Mulford Hackett, meanwhile,
co-introduced state legislation in 1923 that first advocated the
building of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Charlotte Cunneen-Hackett was a
pioneering woman attorney at the firm in the early 20th century, who
later established the influential Charlotte Cunneen-Hackett Charitable
Trust.
By 1950 the
firm had evolved into the entity known as Corbally and
Gartland. Firm member Charles L. McCann helped his brother James
establish the James J. McCann Trust, which was subsequently directed by
John J. Gartland. Mr. Gartland oversaw many important community
endeavors, including reconstruction of the historic Bardavon Building,
development of Marist College, the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and McCann
Ice Arena, Saint Francis Hospital, and Our Lady of Lourdes High School,
among others.
John Gartland and the firm
continued to provide counsel to businesses, banks, institutions and
citizens of the Hudson Valley region and beyond. In 1974 the firm adopted the name of Corbally,
Gartland and Rappleyea, now CORBALLY, GARTLAND and
RAPPLEYEA, LLP, a limited liability partnership. The firm has continued to be associated
with innovation and progress.
Although our Firm
gained its reputation in the early years for its
prominence in the fields of banking and real estate law,
our expertise as well as our client base, has grown to
widely diverse areas of the law, including general
business and corporate law, entertainment law,
litigation, land use development, environmental law,
estate planning and construction law. The city of Poughkeepsie,
situated half way between New York City and Albany on the east bank of the
Hudson River, has long been a hub of development for industry, technology,
business and education. And Corbally, Gartland and Rappleyea, LLP has
played an integral part in the development and civic life of the city and
region. Additionally, our Firm has a long history representing the
personal legal affairs of the residents of the Hudson Valley.
Although we are a general practice
firm, each of our attorneys and paralegals concentrates
in selected areas of the law to insure our clients a high
level of expertise at an affordable cost. It is the
combined knowledge of our professional staff which
provides our clients with the assurance that even the
most complex legal problems will be handled competently,
efficiently and effectively. Each CORBALLY, GARTLAND and
RAPPLEYEA, LLP client can expect to have their respective
legal problems handled in a personalized, thoughtful,
diligent, confidential and efficient manner. To insure
that our clients receive legal services in a timely and
cost effective manner, our attorneys are assisted by a
well trained paralegal, secretarial and support staff at our main
location on 35 Market Street in Poughkeepsie,
and branch offices in Rhinebeck and Millbrook.
